Jack of all, Master of None in a Computer Field

By Aneesh Bhatnagar

I am sure you would have heard of the famous figure of speech “Jack of All, Master of none“. It is a very popular figure of speech, which means that a person who knows everything and is not a master of a single thing. Well, in real life, I believe that this figure of speech can be applicable to everyone. I agree that one should be a master in a field and not have his fingers in every field. It does no good. However, in the field of computers, I feel that this saying does not hold true, especially for a Free Lancer and blogger like me. Still I wouldn’t say that this is the only thing that every free lancer should do.

A Confused Person

For example, take the case of a Freelance website developer. When someone would hire a freelance website developer, apart from knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or jQuery, the client would want the person be capable of using Photoshop to do some basic modifications in the images and stuff sent to him. I wrote an article earlier in which I discuss why Learning Photoshop is a must of every web developer or any developer in fact. Head over to that article and read it now. A lot of people call me a Jack of all, and master of none. I wouldn’t deny that fact. I know a lot of stuff in various fields, and definitely I’m no master in any field. I am learning new things every now and then to grow my knowledge base.

Free Lancing

The reason for going against the figure of speech is that when a person hires a Free Lancer to do any work, he expects him to be fluent in all the fields required for the work. I am speaking on behalf of a Web Developer and Designer’s point of view. Earlier, I was acquainted with only HTML and CSS, and I thought that I could design really great websites with my knowledge, but when I applied for freelancing projects, I realised that learning JavaScript and jQuery are also important for website developers as the clients require you to create websites using great JavaScript or jQuery add-ons. That’s when I realised that I need to learn JavaScript and jQuery as a part of my Web Development kit.

Well, that’s all that I have to say that learning everything for a freelancer is considered good, because the client has to deal with only one freelancer to do the work and not hire more professionals in any field. In the end, I would just like to say that everyone should be a Master in a single thing, but not ignore other things as well in the fields of Computers. The main reason behind sharing articles and tutorials on all these topics is to allow people to have access to all those tutorials at a single place. That’s my aim for this blog.

That’s the end of this short article that I felt like sharing with everyone. What is your opinion on this article?
